Compared to most of the gods, Hermes is gentle. He isn't arrogant nor does he have particularly strange quirks. He's helpful toward all who need it and he's quite reasonable, more willing to look at both sides of a story before making a decision. He cares about all of his children and can get nasty if someone ever implies otherwise. However, even though this is one of his character traits, he won't save one of his children from death for fear of upsetting the fates.

Until Hermes met the mortal woman, May Castellan, his life wasn't interesting. Being the messenger of the gods, he was the mail-man for all the gods and goddesses who knew how to contact him. However, his life was thrown into chaos after meeting and falling in love with May Castellan. She was a woman that had the Sight and could see clearly through the Mist. She had the extra ability of being able to see the future.

Hermes fell in love with her and, soon after, May was pregnant. She had a beautiful baby boy that they agreed to name Luke. They seemed a happy enough family, or so Hermes thought. That was, until, May thought she could be the next Oracle. The process went horribly and May came out insane.

Although he didn't want to, Hermes had to leave May to take care of Luke on her own, although he often checked up on them both. Due to an incedent that happened when Hermes was still an infant, he had the gift of Forsight, or the "knowledge and art of prophesy", Hermes already foresaw his son's future. That was why he never visited when Luke was home. When Luke ran away, there was nothing Hermes could do except comfort May and be there for her.

The first time Hermes met Luke was when Luke and his friends Thalia and Annabeth returned to the Castellan household due to Thalia's injured leg. Hermes appeard in the living room and got in a screaming match with Luke.

Ever since, Hermes has feared being a bad father. He didn't help Luke and his friends get to Camp Halfblood though he truly tried. Eventually, it was Grover Underwood who helped his son and his friends.

When they were at Camp Halfblood, Hermes sent Luke on a quest he thought his son could handle. Luke came out with a scar on his face and hate for his father. Hermes could only watch as Luke slowly turned bad and watch as Luke betrayed his friends and almost killed Percy.

The next involvment he had in the life of Luke Castellan was when e appeared on the shore of the lake at Camp Halfblood. He gave Percy Jackson supplies to help him on his quest and asked if he could try and convince Luke to come back to Camp Halfblood.

Hermes' heart was cruelly broken when he found out (although he already knew) that Luke truly and honestly hated him.

After the debacle with the Ophitarious, Hermes voted to keep Percy and his friends alive.

Hermes still had his duties as the messenger of the gods and, when Typhon escaped, he was the only contact between Mt. Olympus and the Gods. He appeared before Percy Jackson when he and his friends were in the throne room on Olympus. He gets angry with Annabeth because she didn't save Luke and is accused of not loving Luke and abandoning him by Percy. Hermes blows up at Percy and leaves.

Hermes is witness to the Fates taking away Luke's body. Hermes blesses his son's body and he and Percy come to good terms. After Percy makes his wish, Hermes gives the son of Poseidon a list of all of his children outside of the camp and asks Percy to personally escort them to the camp.

Ever since, the messenger of the gods has been watching over his children, waiting for the right moments to claim them.
